Women’s Race Preview – Ford Ironman World Championship – Kona, Hawaii 2010

Women’s Race: A deeper and faster field for women will make for a really interesting race. Chrissie Wellington has been so impressive and so good, that she has changed the sport! The bar has been raised and his year will see the beginning of new levels further down the ranks. Favorites to challenge are Julie Diben and Mirinda Carfrae, but look for other faces to have impact on the race. Five to seven girls have a chance to really make an impact. Look for some big rides and runs from people. Each athlete comes into the event with a different background and a different journey, but they all share one common thread. They’ve been following a reduced volume, increased specificity program that is unique to Matt Dixon’s purplepatch elite training methodology. At Kona, each athlete will concentrate their efforts on providing a strong individual performance on the back half of each swim, bike and run. The philosophy is that if an athlete is overly tired going into an event, fatigue will show up on the back end. The number one priority for our athletes has been to arrive healthy, fit and fresh, with ZERO injuries, so that they can do something exceptional on race day. They’ve done a fine job of doing just that!
