By admin

Happy Wednesday!

This is totally irrelevant but was sent to me by a client and I just had to share:

Funny stuff! Anyways…  I hope you’re having a wonderful week and that it’s not dragging by. It seems like the days are flying by… I guess it’s because of the fun of the season.

Time flies when you’re having fun, right?

Too bad it’s not jut the holiday season… it’s flu/strep/cold/bug season too. Every where I look, someone is either catching something or getting over something.

And I can’t tell you how many times I hear:

“Is it okay to workout when… (Fill in the blank with anything).”

So that’s why I am focusing on the many Is it okay questions for today’s Ask Away Wednesday.

If you have missed out on previous Ask Away Wednesdays, catch up on the most recent:

Is It Okay To Workout When I Have A Cold?

The classic rule of thumb is that as long as you don’t have a head cold you’re fine to partake in light exercise. Don’t push yourself too hard since your body is already working to fight the virus and listen to your body.

If you’re taking cold medicine make sure to check the symptoms as some can cause increase heart rate and fatigue which might compromise your workouts.

On the flip side, people who exercise regularly are less likely to get colds and those that do appear to have milder cases than the non-fitness goers. (Source)

Is It Okay To Workout When I Have A Fever?

No, it’s not okay. Your body is working really hard to fight whatever virus or illness you have and you don’t want to over work it with exercise. Let your body focus on recover and killing the germs, and not on trying to allow your muscles to recover after training.

Rest, drink fluids, see your doctor and wait for the fever to subside before walking into a gym.

No to mention people don’t want to be around you when you look like death. Just sayin’.

Is It Okay To Workout When Sore

Since I am often the reason that women wake up sore the next morning, I hear this question time and time again! If you’re sore the last thing you should do is to do nothing. That only keeps your muscles tight and could slow down recovery.

Instead, get moving! Stretch after a good workout and the following day. If you’re sore, light exercise will likely help the pain and “loosen” you up… not to mention it can help increase blood flow to help recovery times.

However, if you’re so sore that you find every day task (like sitting on a toilet) a nightmare then by all means take an extra rest day before hitting the gym up. Just make sure to hydrate, massage the muscles and eat a proper, clean diet to help the soreness subside so you can continue on with your killer workouts!

It It Okay To Workout While On My Period?

YES!!! Exercising before and during your period can help PMS and cramping. Not to mention it can help fight away the chocolate cravings. Exercise is nature’s natural Midol when it comes to that time of the month.

You might not be able to give your workout everything you have, but you will be able to walk away feel better.

Is It Okay To Workout While Pregnant?

Always talk with your doctor first! But the standard rule is that if you’ve been exercising before your pregnancy then you should continue on during your pregnancy. You will likely have to scale back on moves and intensity but by continueing with a workout program you are setting yourself up for a healthier and easier pregnancy and even labor.

Kath at KathEats.com is an inspiration… she was doing Body Pump classes up to the WEEK she had her baby. I also had a client that stuck with boot camp for 7 months of her pregnancy and she was in labor for a whopping 24 minutes! The doctor kept commenting on how strong her core was… boot camp baby!

BUT if you haven’t been exercising, this is not the time to jump right into a new program. Again talk with your doctor! Here are “13 Rules For Safe Pregnancy Exercise” I found.

And that’s a wrap for Ask Away Wednesday!

What questions do you have that you would like to see addressed next week?

Have you ever worked out when you knew you probably shouldn’t?

I have worked out before even when my back was out. It wasn’t a smart choice but we all make dumb decisions. I have also worked out when sick a few times too many… live you learn. That was in my younger, more stubborn life.
