Dear Gym, I Need Some Space

Lately I have felt some tension between the two of us.

I am sure you’ve felt it as well, probably thinking you were being paranoid.

But it’s true.

I walk in, I’m greeted by your card swipe and the nice guy that works your desk. But his smile doesn’t bring excitement or happiness, I find him annoying.

Harsh, yes. But true.

Still, I put my own smile on, say hello and hope that as my workout starts, I’ll find the spark that we once had… not too long ago.

That spark that made me walk around the weight room like I owned the place.

The spark that made each exercise and each rep, a step towards accomplishing something.

That spark that made me want to hang out with you whenever I had free time.

Now, don’t get me wrong Gym, that spark hasn’t died completely. You’ve seen me, really pumping out some great workouts lately.

But are they my best?

Am I giving you the best of me?

The answer is no…

And you deserve that. After all, it was you that 10 years ago led me to change my life around.

thanks gym

It was with you that I was introduced to weight training, figure competitions, and most importantly it was you that showed me my passion for fitness and wanting to help other women.

I realized this morning as I saw this:

sunrise-shem

I love you, but I am not in love with you right now. I need you, but I also need my space. I need more air… literally.

fresh air

Another view of Shem Creek from my run this morning

I promise, it’s not because of running.

  • I want to get stronger
  • More muscular
  • And more fit

I know that the only way to do that is with your help.

But I am going to change things up a little…

gym on wheels

Yup, we’re adding to our collection. But I don’t see these as kettlebells. Nope, I see them as a gym on wheels.

We now have a gym that we can take anywhere we want.

I can do a great full body workout, with that view! How cool is that?

gym anywhere

There is so much potential in myself and I am having a great time thinking about the possibilities of doing things differently this summer.

I know, you’re wondering… what does this mean?

Well,

I am going to start making my workouts revolve around what I am loving… because they’re suppose to be fun!

I am going to start doing workouts at the beach…

Yes, you read that right. The Beach.

We live at the beach, yet we never utilize it! Why!?

Starting tomorrow, I am going to see you, but I am going to keep driving. I will drive until my car hits the sand. Then, Dan and I will take a deep breath, inhale the fresh, salty air (quite a change from the muggy, sweaty air that hangs out with you), and kick our butts.

Will we still see each other? Of course!

I need you, I just need less of you.

It’s not you. It’s me.

It’s far too gorgeous to be stuck inside when I could be experiencing what’s around me.

I am sure you understand? I am sure you’re happy and excited for me (and Dan).

Please, don’t try to tempt me with your cardio televisions. Yes, they might be the only time I can get caught up with the Kardashians…

But I think we can agree that this view:

Sullivans Island

Taken this morning: Sullivan’s Island (I covered a lot of ground!)

Is a lot more appealing than this view:

Don’t tempt me with air conditioning either. Yours has been slack for the past few weeks now. It feels just as humid as the air outside. At least outside, It doesn’t smelly like a high school locker room.

So Gym, please don’t be upset.

I’ll still be around every week, just perhaps 2 times instead of 3 for strength training?  I need your squat “rack” and benches. But I need some other variety right now as well.  And I will not be seen on a treadmill. Those times are over.

It’s time to live life… at least before the temperatures get way out of control and I am forced back into your embrace for 99% of my workouts.

What The F… itness?

I will be trying to do at least 1 workout outside. It’s far too gorgeous not to! Working out doesn’t have to be limited to a gym. 99% of Fit Women’s Weekly workouts can be done ANYWHERE. And that’s what I am going to take advantage of!
