Corinna Coffin: Podcast With The Coolest OCR Elite
By admin
I did my first obstacle course race years ago (4 to be exact), the Rugged Maniac.
It was small, around 3 miles and filled with roughly a dozen obstacles ranging from scaling walls to dragging my body through mud.
It was awesome.
An excuse to get dirty and not get all girly about it.
Over the past few years, I’ve done several obstacle races ranging from the 5K distance to over 8 miles. With each one, I’ve loved testing my body to see what it could accomplish.
Of course the hardest to date so far was the Spartan race this past year. It was also the best and most rewarding. I can totally see why this event has an almost cult like feel about it as people travel the world to compete each weekend.
Dan and I were hooked and have planned out a few for 2015 already. The last race was practice… the next is all about seeing what I can really do in comparison to my age group field.
To help get ready, I have dove in to researching the sport of OCR (Obstacle Course Racing) to learn from the pros.
First, I’m amazed at how popular OCR is becoming and even more so how welcoming of a community it is. It reminds me of our trail race group… everyone excited and trying to grow the sport. There is room for everyone!
This past Sunday, I was able to sit down to Corinna Coffin, you know, the young woman who just happened to place 2nd at the Spartan World Championship. NBD.

The Coolest Girl In OCR
From the moment Corinna said “Hey Taylor!” I knew our conversation would be effortless.
We talked and talked and talked like long lost friends catching up over coffee. In fact, that’s exactly how I described it to Dan when he asked how the podcast went.
Corinna is am amazing young woman who was clearly meant to be in this sport. Everything has fallen into place and her heart, skill and competitive drive makes it clear that there is only one direction for her success… up!
Well, I failed to mention that I was inspired after learning about Corinna’s training methods to hit the stairs.
And yes, we talk a lot about our workouts in the podcast.
Corinna shares her secret morning smoothie recipe (I tried something similar this morning and it was delicious… recipe below). How her very first race went and how her planking ability allowed for a second race.
Oh, and if you’ve ever done a Spartan race then you know that the spear throw sucks for most people. Well, Corinna stuck her first one and shared her tips to help us.
Seriously, weather you have any interest in obstacles courses or not, listen to this podcast. It was the easiest and most entertaining one I’ve done and I really had a hard time saying good bye. I think we’re best friends now.
Thank you Corinna for your time! You guys, this was her last night on vacation and she made time to talk with me, us!
Rock on, we wish you the best of luck for 2015!
What To Check Out
We both shared a few products and events in the podcast, so I wanted to share them incase you were interested too!
- Corinna’s Facebook Page
- Battle Frog Races
- Gnarly Protein: Use promo code “LIFTREV” to get 20% off!
- Black Bean Pasta <–It’s so good!
I’m pretty excited to find that there is a Battle Frog event in South Carolina this year! It also happens to be the same field that our Spartan Race was so it will be fun to compare the two!
The Veggie Filled Morning Shake
Even before talking with Corinna, I had already decided that for the next 2 weeks I was going to start the day with a veggie packed protein shake. Simply because my body is craving veggies and clean eating. My eggs were starting to sound boring so I thought a smoothie challenge was just the perfect change up.
But it was Corinna who convinced me to add a few items I normally wouldn’t have to really spice it up.
This shake is full of vitamins, nutrients, healthy fats and proteins to kick start the day off right.
- Small handful of pea shoots
- 2 Cups baby spinach
- 2 Brussel Sprouts
- 1/2 inch of fresh ginger, peeled
- 1/2 Frozen Banana
- 1/3 Granny Smith Apple
- 1 Scoop Vanilla Protein
- 1 Tbsp Peanut Butter
- 1.5 Cups Water
Just toss it in the blender and go! This baby was so filling! And surprisingly really tasty.
What’s the strangest thing you would add to a shake?Corinna mentioned she adds eggplant… I’m not sure about that one. Ha! But I’m willing to TRY anything once.
