David Epstein Reveals The Truth About Fitness Genes
By admin
What genetic gifts do you have to make you fit… gifts you may not even know about?
That’s the question that David Epstein wanted to answer when he began his research for The Sports Gene.
I wrote about the book just a few weeks ago. And I recommend it to anyone that loves learning about fitness and athletics.
It puts a lot into perspective while not being overly “text-booky”. As I told David during our talk, I downloaded with the intention of listening to it just during runs, but after the first chapter I was hooked and ended up finishing it in 3 days. Oops.
After that blog post, I hunted down David Epstein, the author to see if he would be interested in being a guest for What The Fitness.
As a big time Sports Illustrated reporter, I was skeptical that David would be able to fit me into his schedule, however I was shocked when less than a week later we were podcasting away. And giddy with excitement… true girl mode.
David was extremely down to earth and we had no problem keeping the conversation going. With my love of science and his love of research, we kept coming up with “what ifs” or “I wonder about…” topics.
Trust me, this is possibly my favorite podcast to date.
The Sports Gene: David Epstein Visits ‘What The Fitness’
What did we cover?
- One thing that took me by surprise was David’s own shock at the success of his book. He jokingly apologized for he audio version, letting me know that he didn’t think anyone would listen to it, so he recorded it himself. He also didn’t think people would actually read the book (which is now a New York Times Bestseller)! Aside from some hilarious accents he tries to pull off, the recording is great! His Australian accent made me chuckle… every time.
- When do women reach their fitness “prime”?
- Will women ever be able to compete against men? David think there is one sport where we will! Bring it.
- If you want to help your kids success with athletics, what do you need to do? How can you help them be the best they can be?
- Who was the most interesting athlete that David interviewed?
- What is it about Dana Torres that may or may not separate her from the rest of the athletic field?
I don’t want to give too much away, so please do me and David a favor, and listen in!
Enjoy!

If you could sit down and talk with any athlete (dead or alive) who would it be?
This is a hard one, but I would love to talk with Mohammed Ali. I have no idea why, but I’ve always found him to be extremely fascinating. Bruce Lee would be a close second. Talk about hard work and dedication. He focused on his training every minute of every day.
