The world record holder — since 2nd February in Sydney — beat the New Zealander Jesse Sergent, who never really gave the impression of endangering the young champion from Adelaide. At 22 years old, Bobridge took the only title that he had been missing, thus crowning off a perfect season. He has shown that he is the man to beat in the specialty, after two years of domination from the American Taylor Phinney. The second evening of the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Apeldoorn was a good one for Australia, which on top of Bobridge’s gold medal, clocked up a bronze with Michael Hepburn — also in the individual pursuit — before taking another prestigious victory in the Women’s team sprint with Anna Meares and Kaarle McCulloch. The duo, which confirmed their victories at the last two Worlds in Pruszkow and in Copenhagen, beat Great Britain in the final, while China won the race-off for bronze medal against France. Great Britain’s silver medal came after gold in the Women’s team pursuit, which opened the evening’s programme. Laura Trott, Wendy Houvenaghel and Danielle King didn’t have much difficulty in the final again the United States. New Zealand finished third in this Olympic
