Friendly Friday: Mellow Mushroom Burger Taste Test

By admin

Happy Friday friends!

Dan and I are still hanging out in the middle of Mt Mitchell National Forest, testing out our backpacking skills. I plan on doing an entire post on all of the gear we purchased and why for those of you interested!

But not today.

Let’s talk Mellow Mushroom.

I’m pretty sure we’ve eaten at Mellow Mushroom more in the past month than I have in years. two visits! Our first was to celebrate our 50K with a delicious helping of cheesy pizza goodness, and the other was to taste test their new menu offerings…

Burgers.

Last week, Mindi from MM, contacted me asking if we would be interested in trying their new menu. I love a good burger, and Dan LOVES Mellow Mushroom, so we took her up on the offer.

Side note: sorry about the lighting of the pictures.

We arrived early, so we sat at the bar and enjoyed a drink… prossecco for me, beer for him. The bartender was extremely nice, and told us a bit more about the burgers.

  • Why did a pizza place decide to start carrying burgers? Let’s face it, when you crave American fare, the question is “am I in the mood for pizza or a burger?”. Now, you don’t have to decide, Mellow Mushroom expanded to meet everyone’s cravings. Smart really, because I am a burger person. Dan, a pizza guy!
  • There are 2 options: Vegan veggie burger or an angus beef burger patty, with 3 different burger options. All three looked great.
  • The burgers aren’t made in house, they are from California and are made with only the highest of quality of beef. I was disappointed at first, because I love local cuisine, however Dan reminded me, if you’re going to burgers from somewhere, Cali is the place of happy cows! Plus, Mellow Mushroom isn’t a “burger” joint… pizza is still their prime focus.

Okay… back to the food.

We kicked off our date with the meatball appetizer. So good!

What is is that makes a ball of meat so tasty? We loved them.

From there, it was burger time.

Dan went with the Fully Blazed beef burger (topped with jalapeños and chipotle mayo and cheese) , while I opted for the Goin Cali veggie burger (avocado, cheese). Both on delicious brioche bun.

I was a bit skeptical at first, veggie burgers are either great or terrible. But all the staff kept saying how delicious they were so I went for it.

I am so glad I did! Awkward eating shot…

The flavor was amazing, seriously the best vegan burger I’ve EVER had. The portabella flavor really came through and paired perfectly with the toppings on the pizza.

I was a little sad when I took my last bite, but filled just enough to not feel stuffed. We walked out into the hot Charleston summer very impressed!

Would I recommend them? Yes.

I’m not going to lie, I still like Sesame better but that’s because they specialize in burgers. For a place that makes pizza, these were spot on.

*Though our dinner was compensated, all thoughts and opinions are my own. Had Mellow Mushroom not paid, I would have shared anyway! :)

The burgers aren’t the only thing from the past week I found myself loving…
