London Olympics 2012 – Epke Zonderland on Men’s Horizontal Bar [7.8.2012]

London’s biggest gig is the Olympics. On August 7 2012, talk in London was of Team GB winning gold medals in dressage, cycling and triathlon. The mood was merry, and Sir Chris Hoy seemed particularly heroic as he announced his professional cycling retirement, a 6th gold medal draped from his Grecian torso. Earlier, at the North Greenwich Arena (usually known as the O2 Arena), I had hoped Ally Raisman would secure a gold in the Women’s Gymnastics Floor Exercise, having been denied bronze in the all-around, and she duly delivered an emotional victory. But the most gasps at the North Greenwich Arena this day were reserved for dashing underdog, the Flying Dutchman, Epke Zonderland on the Men’s Horizontal Bar, who revived my childhood belief in Peter Pan, as he proved a man could fly. Looking every inch a movie star, with a winning smile and an easy manner, he scored an astonishing 16.533 points to secure the first ever Gold for the Netherlands in this event. I had the camera going on my lap, as Zonderland made the world feel like Wonderland, a little bit more amazing than you thought it could be! 🙂
