Sunny Gilbert 2012 USA XC Champs 2-11-12

Interview with Big River Running Company Racing team member Sunny Gilbert who ran the Womens Open 8k at the 2012 USA Cross Country Championships at Forest Park in St. Louis. Gilbert is a former Missouri Class 4 800 meters state champion at Marquette High School for Coach Jim Cary who went on to an outstanding career at The University of Missouri for Coach Jeff Pigg and Coach Rebecca Wilmes. At Mizzou she teamed up with three other native Missouri women to capture the 2001 NCAA DI Indoor National Championship in the Distance Medley Relay. Not just a great athlete, Gilbert excelled in the classroom and in the life and was one of 10 finalists for NCAA Woman of the Year. After graduation she went to The University of Colorado for graduate school where she got the traithlon bug. Several years of amateur triathlons included a national championship and top 10 finishes at the world amateur championship. That led to several more years as a professional triathlon. Gilbert earned her Ph.D in biochemestry and moved back to the St. Louis area recently. Gilbert placed 29th in the Womens Open 8k at the USA XC Championships finishing in 29:53. She was one of two former Marquette State Champions in the race. St. Louis University’s Hilary Orf, the 2006 Class 4 Cross Country State Champion, placed 8th.

Impressions from the ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships 2010 in Immenstadt/Allgäu (Germany) with Sylvain Sudrie (FRA) and Caroline Steffen (SUI) taking the titles, Timothy O’Donnell (USA) and Francois Chabaud (FRA) being second and third in the mens’ competition, Yvonne van Vlerken (NED) and Virginia Berasategui (ESP) finishing second and third in the womens’. Sieger bei den Herren ist Sylvain Sudrie (Frankreich) vor Timothy O’Donnell (USA) und Francois Chabaud (Frankreich), bei den Damen gewann Caroline Steffen (Schweiz) vor Yvonne van Vlerken (Niederlande) und Virginia Berasategui (Spanien).
