Top 10 Thursday: 10 Fall Apple Recipes You Can’t Deny

By admin

Happy Thursday (Thursday already??)! Thanks to everyone who commented, tweeted and facebooked me which shoes I should sacrifice up for the mud run. I’m taking your advice and giving up the blue Pumas. It will be a sad day, and perhaps a few words will be said as I toss them into the donation pile at the end of the race, turn my back and walk away for good.

They have done a great job over the past months and I know they will serve me well on the obstacle course!

Now moving on… today’s Top 10 Thursday is brought to us by the letter A Amanda, my awesome training intern. She has been having some fun in the kitchen, on pinterest and blogs searching for the best apple recipes for the season and had to share her finds!

If you missed last week’s top 10: 10 Foods I Am Obsessed With (Right Now), check it out!

I am not sure what is more popular right now: Apples or Pumpkins? But for the sake of today’s post we’re going for team apple!

Okay, so I am handing it off to Amanda now:

The fall is just “that” time of year. The air is crisp, the leaves are colored and the apples are crunchy! I don’t know about you, but I love some good apple recipes to kick off the beginning of the fall season! My roommate and I have been playing around in our kitchen and here are our favorites!

10 Apple Recipes You Have To Try ASAP

Homemade Vegan Apple Bread:

This is actually one of Taylor’s recipes. And it’s amazing (I’m not just saying that because I see her twice a week either). It’s perfect with a dollop of sunflower butter for breakfast or as an afternoon snack. Even better, wrap it up with some colored plastic wrap and hand it out to the neighbors… maybe that will urge them to give out the good Halloween candy this year! Here’s the recipe.

Mini Apple Crisp Recipe:

Who doesn’t love a good apple crisp, seriously!? Lisa at Snack Girl got it write with this! It’s light, healthy and taste oh so yum.

This recipe calls for only 4 ingredients:

  1. 1 medium apple
  2. 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  3. 1 tablespoon oats
  4. 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

So… no matter how “unlucky” you are in the kitchen, I think I can promise  you’ll get this right. I am pretty sure it would be awesome with a hot cup of chai tea. Here’s the recipe.

Apple Nachos {Vegan}

vegan-apple-nachos

Wow, Allyson over at Manifest Vegan hit a home run with this one. What part of “apple nachos” sounds bad? All the benefits of eating healthy, fiber filled apples while getting to indulge in “nachos”! This is a great fall treat and a favorite for the kids!

Have a fall nacho party! Get them in the kitchen to help toss it together.

There is so much room to play around with this. Try different nuts… walnuts, pecans, chestnuts… all sound awesome. Instead of peanut butter try sunflower butter, etc. The point is customize it and have fun with it. See her recipe.

Warm Apple Toast

I found this recipe over at FitSugar and had to give it a go, when you see something you want sometimes you just can’t wait!

If you’re looking for a yummy snack idea that will warm you up on a cold afternoon or satisfy your sweet tooth craving after dinner, you have to make this delicious apple toast. While the apple bread rocks, sometimes you just don’t have the patience to wait for your treat. That’s where this toast comes in.

Top it with a dollop of Greek yogurt mixed with apple pie spice and you’ve got breakfast/snack/dessert/heck even lunch! Get the recipe here.

Skillet Apple Pie Crisp.

I know that I said Lisa was on to something with her crisp and she was… but for a bit more indulgent apple idea feast your eyes on this baby:

You think it looks yum, imagine the taste! Lol. I love FoodNetwork! By using homemade granola (use raisins in place of blueberries and apples instead of coconut), and substituting the butter our for some coconut oil, you can make this “healthy apple crisp” even healthier.

Forget the butter and store bought granola… if you’re going to do it, might as well do it right, right? Here’s the recipe.

Apple Phyllo Pie

Don’t worry its ok! You CAN keep apple pie on the menu with this low-fat galette-style apple phyllo pie! Perfect treat for fall!

Advice from Taylor: Don’t be worried by the word phyllo. I have found a lot of people shy away from it, intimidated by using it. I promise it’s not hard and you won’t ruin your apple dessert. The trick I use is to keep a barely damp towel over the layers and don’t feel the need to rush. I promise it won’t go dry too fast on you.

This recipe is from Low Fat Cooking, and even though it looks intense, it’s not. But your friends will still be blown away when you bring this to dinner! :) Recipe is here.

Homemade Maca Cider

Cider is all the rage this year. Spiced cider, cider ales, and of course hot apple cider. You didn’t think I would put together the list of fall’s top apple foods without listing cider, now did you?

To find the BEST cider, it only made sense to turn to Amie over at The Healthy Apple! I knew she wouldn’t steer me in the wrong direction and I was right! The smells fill your house and even if you’re not a big cider fan, you’ll love the aroma! It’s worth making it just for that, lol. Seriously.

Check Amie’s recipe out here.

Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Cookies.

Oatmeal + Apples + Cookie = FALL PERFECTION

I mean who doesn’t love cookies? These are a perfect fall treat that everyone in the family will love and look forward to! The recipe is from Two Peas And Their Pod, click to see the full recipe.

*This recipe calls for eggs, if you’re taking the vegan route you can use flaxmeal to make a flax-egg instead (1 tbsp flaxmeal + 3 tbsp water, mixed). And in place of butter you can use extra apple sauce or coconut oil.

Hot Apple Cereal.

Start the morning off right with a bowl of hot (or cold) apple pie cereal. For quick on the go meals this is P-E-R-F-E-C-T! I know Taylor’s been going crazing with this! Only 3 ingredients needed (4 if you wanna get fancy) and you’re ready to sit down for breakfast.

If you’re really in a hurry toss it in a blender and make it into a smoothie! (Note from T: I’ve done this and it rocks). Here’s the recipe.

 Fresh Apple Sauce.

If you haven’t ever made your own apple sauce, OMG, do it! Please do it! There is just nothing like fresh, homemade apple sauce! Stir it into oats, spread on toast or just eat it with a spoon! So good.

Lindsay over at Love and Olive Oil has it all laid out for you. She makes it look so amazing that you’ll want to go apple picking asap. Or at least run to the grocery store.

Her recipe (here) makes several jars, I would personally cut it back by 1/2 for a smaller, more manageable quantity. And in place of sugar, I would go with syrup (but 1/2 the 1/2 since maple syrup is sweeter than sugar).

So there you have it 10 irresistable apple recipes! Go grab some apples and get cooking! Let me know what your favorite recipe is.

Now for the really important question of the day:

WHICH IS BETTER: Apple Or Pumpkin?

Taylor: Personally, I am all about apples. Don’t get me wrong, I love pumpkin but apples are sweet, savory and they keep the doctor away!
