You’re Sports Bra Isn’t Sized Right + 5K PR Victory

By admin

8 out of 10 women are currently wearing the wrong size sports bra.

That’s a fun fact that I learned on Friday when I visited my friends at Fleet Feet for my very first sports bra fitting. vixen sports bra

This is the “Vixen” the bra I ended up with!

If you’re like me, you likely just try to find a sports bra that holds the girls in place, while not breaking the bank.

But when I realized that the bra that I walked into the store with didn’t fit me properly (it was too big), I really appreciated this opportunity!

No Sports Bra = No Fitness?

I’ve heard so many wonderful things through the blog-o-sphere regarding Moving Comfort so when Fleet Feet decided to team up with them in order to help “support” high school girls, I was all about it.

Apparently, not having a sports bra is holding a lot of high schoolers back from being active. They’re uncomfortable physically and mentally… it’s no fun running or moving around without the support of a good bra, and it’s not fun being self conscious in front of a tons of teenage peers.

So Fleet Feet is doing something really cool. For every Moving Comfort bra sold, they’re donating one to a local high schooler in need of one. So far they have close to 1000 teenage girls in need of a sports bra! That’s 1000 girls being held back physically.

Smart, right?

I think it’s a great idea!

So back to the bra fitting…

How To Determine Your Size

I had the help of Robin, one of Fleet Feet’s sales associates. She was so knowledgeable that I walked out knowing way more than I ever thought I would about sports bras…

Like, did you know that the padded cups in some bras were called “cookies”? Of course I had to choose a bra that had them just so I could say: “Look, I have cookies in my bra!”. Yup, I’m turning 30 in 5 months, can’t you tell?

Moving on…

First Robin measured right below my breasts (rib cage) or where the band goes around. This is the “smallest” reading and determines the band size you should opt for.

The second measurement was taken along the bust at the fullest point of the breasts. The difference between the rib case measurement from the bust measurement determines the cup size.

According to Robin’s findings, I am a 32A… which means I have been wearing the wrong size this whole time. I always thought I was a B-cup. Sucks when you find out you’re boobs are smaller than you thought.

Then it was time to try on a ton of bras to fully understand proper fit. I really liked this one:

Love that the back has a clasp and the shape of the cups, but as seen in the picture, I prefer raceback bras.

So after trying on a few more Moving Comfort Bras, I ended up with the black Vixen (picture above). I love it! And at only $ 36, a very reasonably priced.

My favorite part? The cookie inserts allow for the bra to compress everything down without flattening me out.

Other Interesting Sports Bra Facts:

  • Did you know that no matter how top heavy you are, you should not double up on sports bras? That’s a sign you’re in the wrong size/fit/model/etc. It’s bad for the support and for the lifespan of the bras.
  • A sports bra is like a running shoe, it has a shelf life of about 6-12 month depending on how much wear it gets. <– I have a few that are pushing YEARS old. Oops.
  • The ultimate wardrobe should have 3+ sports bras to allow rotation in order to get the most time out of bras. This one I don’t have a problem with!
  • Never dry bras in the dryer, this can break down the elasticity and shorten it’s lifespan. Always hang them up.
  • ALWAYS try on a bra before purchasing it, in the dressing room do moves like jumping jacks, high knees, etc to mimic exercise to see how it will hold up.

If you need a great new bra, AND want to support an awesome cause then definitely check out Fleet Feet in Mt Pleasant (or their website)!

They are a family owned business and I support Chris and his wife Amy 100%! They’re awesome.
